Short answer

How we got this number

We started with Modernize's national range of $4,500 to $15,000, with an average of $9,500[13], the same base our Houston and Chicago pages use. Its prefab kits run $2,000 to $5,000 and custom tile $7,000 to $15,000[13]. Fixr says labor is 40% to 60% of a walk-in shower's cost[5], so we used 50%.

For the labor half, we used federal wage data. In May 2025, the median hourly wage in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX metro area was $29.45 for plumbers and $23.04 for tile and stone setters[1]. The national medians were $30.67 and $26.77[2]. That gives ratios of 0.96 and 0.86. We averaged the two trades for a Dallas labor factor of 0.91.

StepLowAverageHigh
National range[13]$4,500$9,500$15,000
Labor at 50%[5]$2,250$4,750$7,500
Labor x 0.91[1][2]$2,048$4,325$6,828
Materials and other costs (unchanged)$2,250$4,750$7,500
Dallas estimate, rounded to $100$4,300$9,100$14,300

Using 40% or 60% labor instead leaves the low end at $4,300 and moves the high end to $14,500 or $14,200. Angi's Dallas numbers are its national numbers times about 1.031[3][4]; Angi says it applies local price index data to national averages[4]. So Angi's Dallas page is not separate local data, which is why we show both. Homewyse prices only parts of a shower (base, liner, faucet), not the whole job, so we did not use it.

What changes the price in Dallas

The slab. In 2024, 97.9% of new single-family homes started in the West South Central states sat on concrete slabs[10]. If the new drain goes anywhere other than where the old one was, the slab gets cut and patched. A center drain, a linear drain or a curbless floor usually means that work.

Clay soil. About 70% of rated soil area in Dallas County has high or very high shrink-swell potential, by our calculation from USDA soil data[11]. A slow leak under the old shower can move a slab, so find and fix leaks before tile goes in.

Permits. Dallas's no-permit repair scope cannot include adding, altering or relocating water supply, drainage, waste or vent piping[8]. Most walk-in showers need a permit. The fee schedule lists a $181 base fee for single-family alterations, plus $100 for each additional trade such as electrical[6]. The city adds a $15 technology fee for each application, permit or plan submitted through its online system[7].

Licensing. Dallas says any plumbing contractor working on your home needs a state license even when the job needs no permit[9]. Texas plumbing licenses come from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners[12].

Plumber rates. Angi lists Dallas plumbers at $80 to $120 an hour[4]. Ask whether a quote is hourly or fixed.

Questions to ask a Dallas contractor

  • Who pulls the Dallas permit, and is the fee in the price?
  • What is your plumber's TSBPE license number?
  • Will the drain stay where the tub drain is now? If not, who cuts and re-pours the slab, and is the drain line pressure tested before the patch?
  • What waterproofing goes behind the tile, and is it under warranty?
  • What happens to the price if you find rot or a leak after demolition?
  • Is the glass door or panel in this quote, or a separate bid?

When to call a pro

  • Any new valve, drain or shower pan: a TSBPE-licensed plumber and a Dallas permit.
  • Moving the drain or going curbless: the slab work belongs in the written quote.
  • Cracks in the floor, sticking doors or signs of a leak near the bathroom: a leak test first, then a structural engineer if the floor has moved.
  • To get a real number: these ranges cannot price your bathroom, so get two or three written quotes.

More questions

Is a walk-in shower cheaper in Dallas than the national average?

Slightly, on labor. BLS data put the median Dallas-Fort Worth plumber wage about 4% below the national median and the tile setter wage about 14% below it. Applied to the labor half of the job, that trims roughly 4.5% off national prices.

Do I need a permit for a walk-in shower in Dallas?

Usually, yes. Dallas's no-permit repair scope cannot include adding, altering or relocating water supply, drainage, waste or vent piping. A new shower valve, drain or pan falls outside it, so plan on a permit.

How much is the permit for a shower in Dallas?

Dallas lists a $181 base fee for alterations or repairs to a single-family home, plus $100 for each additional trade, and a $15 technology fee for each document submitted online. The city says final fees are set when you apply.
