Walk-In Showers and Bath Remodels in Cypress, TX: Costs (2026)

Last reviewed Reviewed by the Walk-In Shower Quotes editorial team 3 min read 12 sources

Short answer

A walk-in shower in Cypress typically runs $4,400 to $14,700 in 2026, about $9,300 on average, from our Houston-area estimate. Cypress is unincorporated Harris County, so no city plumbing permit applies. The plumber still needs a Texas license, and your utility district (MUD) may have its own plumbing rules.

Key facts

  • Harris County's Office of the County Engineer says a permit is needed for all development within Harris County, defining development as any man-made change to improved or unimproved real estate.[6]
  • Outside city limits, Texas law still requires a plumbing license for plumbing done as part of a remodel on a property connected to a public water system, except for an owner in their own homestead.[8]
  • In Cypress ZIP code 77433, the median home was built in 2011 and about 87% of homes were built in 2000 or later (ACS 2024 5-year, our arithmetic).[10]
  • In Cypress ZIP code 77429, the median home was built in 2003, and about 81% of occupied homes are owner-occupied (ACS 2024 5-year).[9]

Walk-in shower cost in Cypress

Cypress sits inside the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands metro that the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses for wage data. The median plumber there earned $29.47 an hour in May 2025[5]. Our Houston-area ranges adjust national installed prices for that wage. We do not have Cypress-only price data, so these are the numbers to plan with.

Permits in Cypress

Cypress is not a city. It is an unincorporated area of Harris County. If your home with a Cypress mailing address turns out to be inside a city's limits, that city's permit rules apply instead.

No city plumbing permit. The Texas rule that requires plumbing permits applies to cities[8]. Outside a city, there is no city plumbing permit or city inspector for a shower swap.

Harris County. The Office of the County Engineer issues permits in Harris County. Its FAQ says "a permit is needed for all development" and defines development as any man-made change to improved or unimproved real estate[6]. Its residential construction permit lists items such as new homes, garages, pools, driveways, septic systems and fill, and does not mention interior plumbing[7]. So for a shower inside an existing home, ask before you assume. The residential group's number is 713-274-3920[6]. Use the county's address lookup to check whether your home is in a floodplain; if it is, the FAQ calls for extra drawings and elevation information on permitted work[6].

Your MUD. If your water and sewer bill comes from a municipal utility district (MUD), call it before work starts. Texas law lets the owner of a public water system adopt a plumbing code, and work installed under it must be inspected by a plumbing inspector[8]. Ask whether the district requires a plumbing inspection for remodel work.

Cypress homes and what they mean for the job

The Census Bureau has no single "Cypress" area, so we use its two main ZIP code areas. In 77433, the median home was built in 2011 and about 87% of homes date from 2000 or later[10]. In 77429, the median year is 2003 and about 13% of homes predate 1980[9]. In both, about 81% of occupied homes are owner-occupied[9][10].

What that means:

  • Newer homes, fewer pipe problems. In homes this young, a shower update is mostly about the layout, the curb height and finishes.
  • Drains in the slab. Keep the drain where the tub drain sits to hold the price down. A curbless entry usually means cutting concrete.
  • Moisture still matters. EPA advises indoor humidity below 60% and drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours[12]. A fan vented outside, and a waterproof layer checked before tile goes on, protect a new shower in a humid climate.
  • Older pockets. In 77429's older homes, ask for an allowance for drain or framing repairs found behind the old tub.

Choosing a company in Cypress

Without a city inspector on many jobs, you are the quality check:

  • License. Texas requires a plumbing license for plumbing done during a remodel on a property served by a public water system, even outside a city[8]. Look the plumber up in the TSBPE public license search[11].
  • Code. A licensed plumber in an area no city regulates must still follow a plumbing code adopted by the state board[8]. Ask which one.
  • Inspection. Ask whether your MUD or anyone else will inspect the work, and get any sign-off in writing.
  • Proof of insurance and references. Ask for both before a deposit.

Owners may do plumbing in their own homestead without a license[8].

When to call a pro

  • Any new shower valve, drain or pan: a TSBPE-licensed plumber[8][11].
  • A home in a floodplain, or a remodel after flooding: call the Harris County residential permits group first[6].
  • Mold larger than about 10 square feet behind the old tub: EPA says that is more than a homeowner cleanup[12].
  • A curbless entry or a moved drain that needs the slab cut.

More questions

Do I need a permit for a new shower in Cypress?

If your home is in unincorporated Harris County, there is no city plumbing permit. Harris County's engineer says a permit is needed for all development, so if the work goes beyond the bathroom, or the home is in a floodplain, call the county's residential permits group at 713-274-3920. Also ask your MUD whether it inspects remodel plumbing.

Does a plumber in Cypress need a license?

Yes. Texas law requires a plumbing license for plumbing done as part of a remodel on a property connected to a public water system, even outside city limits. Check the license in the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners public search.

Is a walk-in shower cheaper in Cypress than in Houston?

We have no Cypress-specific price data. Cypress is in the same Bureau of Labor Statistics metro as Houston, so we use the same Houston-area ranges. Your own quotes are the best local check.
