Tub to Shower Conversion Cost in Dallas, TX (2026)

Last reviewed Reviewed by the Walk-In Shower Quotes editorial team 3 min read 11 sources

Short answer

A tub to shower conversion in Dallas typically costs $1,900 to $11,500 in 2026, based on national conversion prices with the labor share adjusted for Dallas-Fort Worth plumber and tile setter wages from the BLS. A prefab stall in the tub's footprint sits at the low end; tile, a moved drain or a curbless floor push it up.

Key facts

  • BLS May 2025 medians for the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro: plumbers $29.45 an hour and tile and stone setters $23.04, both below the national medians of $30.67 and $26.77.[1]
  • Angi puts a Dallas tub to shower conversion at $1,547 to $8,248, about $3,093 on average (updated July 9, 2026).[5]
  • This Old House (2026): moving a drain line costs $900 to $1,100 and a new or upgraded shower valve $700 to $1,200.[3]

The first four rows are our Dallas estimates, built from This Old House's 2026 national prices by type[3]. Two plumbing line items that often decide where you land: moving a drain line runs $900 to $1,100, and a new or upgraded shower valve $700 to $1,200, both national figures[3].

How we got this number

This Old House puts a typical conversion at $2,000 to $12,000 nationally[3]. Angi says labor is 40% to 60% of a conversion[4], so we treated half of each price as labor.

To localize that half, we used BLS wage data for the two trades that do this work. The May 2025 median hourly wage in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX metro area was $29.45 for plumbers and $23.04 for tile and stone setters[1]. Nationally the medians were $30.67 and $26.77[2]. The ratios are 0.96 and 0.86, and their average, 0.91, is our labor factor.

Angi's Dallas range is lower at the top because it describes a more basic mix of jobs. Its Dallas figures equal a national typical range of $1,500 to $8,000 with a $3,000 average (its full national range is $1,200 to $15,000[4]) times about 1.031[5], so it is a price-index adjustment, not a separate Dallas survey. Angi also lists Dallas conversion crews at $60 to $95 an hour per worker[5].

What changes the price in Dallas

Old tile on a mortar bed. The median Dallas home was built in 1981, and about 48% were built before 1980 (our arithmetic from Census data)[10]. Many contractors expect thick mortar-set tile in bathrooms from that era, which means more demolition time and more debris. Ask how the bid handles it.

Drain location. Keeping the shower in the tub's footprint is the main way to hold cost down[3]. In a slab house, a drain moved even a short distance means cutting concrete.

Permit fees. Dallas lists a $181 base fee for alterations to a single-family home and $100 for each added trade[6]. A $15 technology fee applies to each document filed through the city's online system[7]. A conversion with only plumbing work is one trade; adding a fan or new lighting circuit adds another.

Who does the work. State law lets a homeowner do plumbing in their own homestead[8], and Dallas issues homeowner permits with a signed affidavit[9]. Anyone you pay must hold a plumbing license from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners[11].

Questions to ask a Dallas contractor

  • Does the price assume the new drain stays at the tub drain location?
  • Is removal and disposal of the old tub and tile included?
  • Will a licensed plumber replace the valve, and what is the TSBPE license number?
  • Is the Dallas permit and inspection schedule in your quote?
  • If the walls hide old mortar-set tile or water damage, how is extra time billed?

When to call a pro

  • Any change to the drain, valve or supply lines: a licensed plumber and a Dallas permit, unless you hold a homeowner permit for your own homestead.
  • A low window over the tub that will end up inside the shower.
  • Soft subfloor or stains around the old tub: check for a leak before the new pan goes in.
  • To compare bids: ask each contractor to list removal, plumbing, waterproofing, door and permit separately.

More questions

Do I need a permit to replace a tub with a shower in Dallas?

In most cases, yes. Texas cities over 5,000 people must require a plumbing permit except for leak repairs and swapping items such as faucets, valves and toilets. A new shower drain, valve or pan is not on that list.

Can I convert my own tub to a shower in Dallas?

On your own homestead, yes, with a homeowner permit. Dallas requires an affidavit that you will do the work yourself with no paid help, pass every inspection, and hire a licensed contractor if you cannot finish.

Why is Angi's Dallas average so much lower than your range?

Angi's $3,093 Dallas average reflects many basic stall swaps. Our range covers custom tile and curbless conversions too, which This Old House prices up to $12,000 and $15,000 nationally.
