One-day bathroom remodels: what gets done and what it costs

Last reviewed Reviewed by the Walk-In Shower Quotes editorial team 4 min read 5 sources

Short answer

A one-day bathroom remodel usually means a made-to-measure acrylic tub or shower system installed in a single day, after an earlier measuring visit. It can be a liner over your old tub or a new acrylic base and walls. HomeAdvisor (2026) puts tub and shower liner installs at $2,681 to $10,147, averaging $6,394.

Key facts

  • HomeAdvisor (Jun 2026): installing a shower or bathtub liner costs a normal range of $2,681 to $10,147, with an average of $6,394.[1]
  • HomeAdvisor (Jun 2026): after a technician measures and orders a made-to-fit shell, installation takes a day.[1]
  • HomeGuide (2025): replacing a bathtub with a prefab shower stall costs $1,000 to $8,000, including removal, the stall, doors, fixtures and installation.[2]
  • The FTC Cooling-Off Rule gives you until midnight of the third business day to cancel many sales made in your home for a full refund.[3]

What "one-day" usually means

"One-day bath," "bathroom in a day" and "same-day bathroom remodel" are marketing terms, not a trade standard. In most offers they describe one of two jobs:

  1. A liner or cover system. HomeAdvisor describes a bathtub liner as a custom, one-piece shell, usually acrylic or PVC, that slips over your existing tub, often with a matching wall surround[1].
  2. A tear-out and acrylic replacement. The old tub or shower is removed and replaced with a prefab acrylic base and wall panels, sometimes as a tub to shower conversion[2].

Either way, there is usually a measuring visit first. HomeAdvisor says that after a technician measures your tub and orders a made-to-fit shell, installation takes a day, and the tub is ready to use by the next morning[1].

What can usually be done in one day

When the layout stays the same, a crew can often:

  • Remove the old tub, shower base or surround, or prepare it for a liner.
  • Install an acrylic base or tub liner and wall panels.
  • Swap the faucet trim, shower head and drain cover.
  • Add grab bars, shelves or a seat where the panels allow.
  • Hang a shower door or rod.

HomeGuide reports that one national acrylic-system company's tub to shower conversions cost $1,200 to $9,500 and typically take 1 day to install[2]. That is one company's range, not a market average.

What usually takes longer than a day

  • Moving the drain or valve. New plumbing locations mean opening floors or walls, and usually a permit and inspection.
  • Custom tile. A tiled shower is built in layers (backer board, waterproofing, tile, grout), and each layer needs time before the next.
  • Curbless entry. Recessing or reframing the floor so it can slope to the drain is structural work.
  • Repairs found during demolition. Rot, mold or a leaking valve behind the old surround has to be fixed before new panels go on.
  • Valve upgrades. The 2021 International Residential Code requires shower valves to be pressure-balanced or thermostatic with a 120°F limit (section P2708.4)[5]. If your old valve does not meet your local code, replacing it adds plumbing work.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Is this a liner over my existing tub, or will the old tub be removed?
  • What exactly is included: base, walls, door, valve, trim, grab bars, disposal, permit?
  • If you find rot or mold behind the walls, how will that work be priced?
  • Will you replace the shower valve, or only the trim?
  • What is the warranty on the product and on the installation, in writing?
  • Are you licensed and insured? The FTC advises hiring only licensed and insured contractors and confirming the license with your state or county[4].
  • How much is the deposit? The FTC advises not paying the full cost up front and notes some states limit down payments[4].

If you sign at home, the FTC Cooling-Off Rule gives you until midnight of the third business day after the sale to cancel many in-home sales for a full refund, and the seller must give you cancellation forms[3]. Be wary of "today only" pricing; the FTC lists pressure for an immediate decision as a warning sign[4].

When to call a pro

  • If you see soft floors, loose tile or stains around the old tub: get an inspection before ordering a liner.
  • If the new layout moves the drain or valve: a licensed plumber should do that work, usually with a permit.
  • If you want a curbless shower: plan for a full remodel, not a one-day install.
  • To compare offers fairly: get at least two itemized written quotes.

More questions

Is a one-day remodel really one day?

The installation is usually one day, but the project is longer. HomeAdvisor (2026) describes a measuring visit first, then a made-to-fit shell is ordered, then installed in a day. Plan for the time between the visit and install day, and for longer if problems turn up behind the old walls.

Is a liner the same as a new tub?

No. HomeAdvisor (2026) describes a bathtub liner as a custom one-piece shell that slips over your existing tub. A full replacement removes the old tub. Ask which one a quote includes.

Can I get a one-day walk-in shower?

Often, if the new shower uses the old tub's footprint and drain. HomeGuide (2025) puts a tub to prefab shower stall swap at $1,000 to $8,000. Curbless entry or a moved drain usually takes longer.
