Short answer
A bathroom remodel in Houston typically costs $5,900 to $17,600 in 2026, about $11,800 on average, based on Fixr's national range with labor adjusted to Houston wages from BLS. Different sources count different scopes. The Cost vs Value midrange job replaces every fixture in a 5 x 7 foot bath, including a new tub with tile surround, toilet, solid-surface vanity and tile floor[5]. Many "typical" remodels in consumer guides are smaller jobs. These are planning numbers, not quotes.
How we got this number
We started with Fixr's national 2026 figures: an average of $12,000, with most remodels between $6,000 and $18,000[1]. Fixr says labor averages 50% of the total[1].
For the local factor, BLS reports a May 2025 median wage of $29.47 an hour for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters in the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX metro[2], against $30.67 nationally[3]. That gives 0.96.
| Step | Low | Average | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| National price[1] | $6,000 | $12,000 | $18,000 |
| Labor at 50%[1] | $3,000 | $6,000 | $9,000 |
| Labor times 0.96[2][3] | $2,883 | $5,765 | $8,648 |
| Our Houston estimate, rounded | $5,900 | $11,800 | $17,600 |
The Cost vs Value report is the stronger local check because it prices the same defined project in each city[4]. Its Houston midrange bath is 10% below national ($23,503 vs $26,138), and its upscale bath is 8% below ($75,005 vs $81,612)[4]. That is a bigger discount than our wage-only method shows. BLS publishes no Houston wage for tile setters; the Texas median, $22.61 an hour[7], is lower than the plumber wage, which may explain part of the gap. Angi's Houston average of $12,794, last updated in February 2026, runs a little above our estimate[6].
What changes the price in Houston
Scope. Angi's Houston page puts a simple partial remodel as low as $2,500 and an upscale total renovation at $30,000 or more, with a general range of $70 to $250 per square foot[6]. Moving the toilet or shower drain costs more than keeping fixtures in place.
Older homes. Houston's median home was built in 1982, and about 47% of homes predate 1980[9]. Many contractors expect older drain lines and mortar-bed tile in homes that age, which adds demolition time. Ask for an allowance for what is found behind the walls.
Permits. Houston requires permits for all plumbing work except faucet, ballcock, valve, disposal and toilet swaps, and for all electrical work[8]. Finish work such as painting, tiling, cabinets and countertops does not need one[8]. The 2026 minimum on any plumbing permit is $131.12 including the administration fee[10].
Who is licensed. General contractors are not licensed in Houston, and the city recommends getting three bids[8]. The plumbers and electricians under them are.
Flood history. If the remodel follows water damage and the home is in a floodplain, the city says to contact its Floodplain Management Office before repairs[8].
Questions to ask a Houston contractor
- What exactly is in scope: fixtures, tile, vanity, lighting, fan, floor?
- Which trades are licensed subcontractors, and who pulls each city permit?
- What allowance is in the bid for rot, old drain lines or mold behind walls?
- Is the exhaust fan ducted outside?
- Can you give me two references from Houston jobs in the last year?
When to call a pro
- Any plumbing move, new circuit or wall change: licensed trades and a city permit[8].
- Signs of past water damage: stains on ceilings below, soft floors or a musty smell.
- A home in the floodplain with flood damage: call the city's Floodplain Management Office first[8].
- To get a firm price: three itemized bids, as the city recommends[8].
