Walk-In Tub Cost in Houston, TX (2026)

Last reviewed Reviewed by the Walk-In Shower Quotes editorial team 3 min read 9 sources

Short answer

A walk-in tub in Houston typically costs $3,500 to $9,900 installed in 2026, about $5,900 on average, based on Fixr's national range with the installation labor adjusted to Houston plumber wages from BLS. Labor is a minority of the price, so the model you pick matters more than the city. Jets, wide doors and electrical work raise it.

Key facts

  • Our 2026 Houston estimate for an installed walk-in tub is $3,500 to $9,900, from Fixr's national $3,500 to $10,000 with installation labor adjusted by BLS wages.[1]
  • Fixr (Jan 2026) puts walk-in tub installation labor at $1,000 to $3,500 of a $3,500 to $10,000 installed price.[1]
  • BLS puts the May 2025 median plumber wage in the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands metro at $29.47 an hour, against $30.67 nationally.[2]
  • Houston says all electrical work requires a permit and a licensed electrical contractor.[5]

These are planning numbers, not quotes. National type and feature prices (soaking, hydrotherapy, bariatric, two-seat) are on the walk-in tub cost page.

How we got this number

Fixr puts a walk-in tub at $3,500 to $10,000 installed in 2026, with a national average of $6,000[1]. Unlike our shower pages, we did not assume a labor share. Fixr gives installation labor in dollars, $1,000 to $3,500[1], so we adjusted those dollars directly.

For the Houston factor, BLS reports a May 2025 median wage for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters of $29.47 an hour in the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX metro[2] and $30.67 nationally[3]. That is 0.96.

National installed price[1]$3,500$6,000$10,000
Installation labor[1]$1,000$2,250 (midpoint)$3,500
Labor times 0.96[2][3]$961$2,162$3,363
Our Houston estimate, rounded$3,500$5,900$9,900

The result is close to national. In Fixr's figures, installation labor is well under half of the installed price[1], and our method leaves the tub's own price at the national level. We found no current Houston walk-in tub figure from a major cost guide, so there is no local published row to compare. For context, the 2025 Cost vs Value report shows Houston remodeling jobs running below national: its universal design bath cost $36,984 in Houston against $42,183 nationally[8]. That project is a full accessible bath, not a walk-in tub, so we do not use it in the estimate.

What changes the price in Houston

Electrical work. Jetted and heated models need power. Houston says all electrical work requires a permit and must be done by a licensed electrical contractor, and it points homeowners to the state's licensing agency to verify master electricians[5]. If the bathroom has no spare circuit, budget for one.

Plumbing permits and licensing. Texas cities over 5,000 people must require a permit for plumbing beyond leak repairs and swaps of faucets, ballcocks, valves, disposals and toilets[6]. Setting a new tub and connecting its drain and supply is not on that list. Houston's 2026 minimum on any plumbing permit is $97.56 plus a $33.56 administration fee[4]. The plumber should hold a license from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners[7].

Hot water. Walk-in tubs hold a lot of water. Many installers check the water heater's capacity first. Ask before you choose a size.

Older homes. About 47% of Houston homes were built before 1980[9]. Older drain lines and shutoff valves may need replacing when the old tub comes out. Ask for that as an allowance in the quote.

Medicare claims. Some sellers suggest Medicare will pay. Read the national page's Medicare section first and get any coverage answer in writing from Medicare, not the seller.

Questions to ask a Houston contractor

  • What is the price of the tub alone, and what is the installation price?
  • Is the electrical work done by a licensed electrician under a City of Houston permit?
  • Who pulls the plumbing permit, and who is the TSBPE-licensed plumber?
  • Will my current water heater fill this tub, and if not, what does an upgrade cost?
  • What is the fill time and drain time for this model?
  • What does the warranty cover, and who services it in Houston?

When to call a pro

  • Any new circuit for jets or a heated seat: a licensed electrician and a city permit[5].
  • Any change to the drain or supply lines: a TSBPE-licensed plumber[7].
  • An upstairs bathroom or soft floor: have the floor checked before a filled tub sits on it.
  • Before you sign: get a written quote that separates the tub, installation, electrical and permit.

More questions

Do I need a permit to install a walk-in tub in Houston?

Usually yes. Texas only exempts leak repairs and simple swaps such as faucets and toilets from city plumbing permits, and Houston requires a permit for all electrical work, which jetted tubs need. The 2026 minimum on a Houston plumbing permit is $131.12.

Is a walk-in tub cheaper in Houston than elsewhere?

Not by much. Houston plumbers earn about 4% less than the national median, per BLS, but labor is only part of a walk-in tub's price. On Fixr's national figures, that saves well under $200 on a typical install.

Is there a Houston-specific price for walk-in tubs?

We did not find a current Houston price published by a major cost guide. That is why this page starts from national installed prices and adjusts only the labor for Houston wages.
