Short answer
A walk-in tub in Chicago typically costs $4,100 to $12,200 installed in 2026, based on Fixr's national range with installation labor raised to Chicago plumber wages from BLS (May 2025). The tub itself is priced nationally, so most of the Chicago premium is labor. Jets, wide doors, electrical work and a bigger water heater add the most.
Key facts
- Fixr (January 2026): walk-in tubs cost $3,500 to $10,000 installed nationally, with installation labor alone usually $1,000 to $3,500.[3]
- BLS OEWS May 2025: plumbers in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN metro earn a median $49.70 an hour, about 1.62 times the $30.67 national median.[1]
- Chicago's 2022 permit fee excerpts list $75 per dwelling unit or toilet room for in-kind replacement of plumbing fixtures without changes to plumbing in walls.[5]

How we got this number
Fixr's 2026 guide puts a walk-in tub at $3,500 to $10,000 installed, and says installation labor alone usually runs $1,000 to $3,500[3]. Because Fixr gives labor in dollars, we adjusted those dollars directly instead of assuming a labor share.
Setting a walk-in tub is mostly plumbing: removing the old tub, connecting supply and drain lines and sealing. So we used one trade, plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters (SOC 47-2152). The BLS May 2025 median is $49.70 an hour in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN metro[1] and $30.67 nationally[2], a ratio of 1.62.
| Step | Low end | High end |
|---|---|---|
| National installed price[3] | $3,500 | $10,000 |
| Installation labor in that price[3] | $1,000 | $3,500 |
| Chicago premium on labor (x 0.62) | $620 | $2,170 |
| Our Chicago estimate, nearest $100 | $4,100 | $12,200 |
We did not apply the tile setter rate, since most walk-in tubs drop into an existing alcove. If your job adds new tile walls or flooring, expect a higher number. We found no Chicago-specific published walk-in tub price to compare against.
What changes the price in Chicago
Permit. Replacing an existing plumbing fixture is Express Permit work in Chicago[6]. The city's 2022 fee excerpts list $75 per dwelling unit or toilet room for in-kind fixture replacement when wall plumbing does not change, and $150 for in-kind replacement of plumbing piping[5].
Hot water. Walk-in tubs hold a lot of water. HomeGuide says high-capacity tubs may need a larger or tankless water heater, at $1,400 to $5,600 installed[4]. In older Chicago homes, check the existing heater's size before choosing a tub.
Old floors and pipes. The median Chicago home was built in 1953[9]. A filled walk-in tub is heavy, and HomeGuide notes that upstairs bathrooms or older floors may need reinforcing[4].
Licensed install. Chicago requires a licensed and bonded plumbing contractor for most plumbing work[7], so a dealer's installer should be one or work under one.
Questions to ask a Chicago contractor
- Is the installer a Chicago-licensed plumbing contractor, and who files the permit?
- Will my water heater fill this tub, or does the quote include a new one?
- Does a jetted model need a new circuit, and is the electrical work and permit in the price?
- Is removal of the old tub included, and how will it come out of the building?
- What is the warranty on the door seal, and who services it locally?
When to call a pro
- Supply or drain changes: a Chicago-licensed plumbing contractor[7].
- Jets, a heated seat or an inline heater: a licensed electrician on a permit.
- An upstairs bathroom or a sagging floor: have the floor checked before delivery.
- To compare offers: get the tub price and the installation price as separate lines.
More questions
Do I need a permit to install a walk-in tub in Chicago?
Usually, yes. Replacing an existing tub with a walk-in tub is replacing a plumbing fixture, which Chicago handles through its plumbing Express Permit. A jetted model that needs a new circuit also involves electrical work, which your contractor should permit separately.
Does Medicare pay for a walk-in tub in Chicago?
Medicare rules are the same in Illinois as everywhere. Original Medicare Part B covers durable medical equipment a provider orders for home use, and walk-in tubs are not on Medicare.gov's list of covered examples. Ask Medicare in writing before you buy.
Is there published Chicago pricing for walk-in tubs?
We did not find any. Angi, which publishes Chicago pages for showers and bathroom remodels, has no Chicago walk-in tub page as of October 2026. That is why our range starts from national prices and adjusts only the labor.
