Short answer
A walk-in shower in Chicago typically costs $5,600 to $18,600 in 2026, based on national installed prices adjusted for Chicago plumber and tile setter wages from BLS (May 2025). Angi's Chicago range is lower, at $6,216 to $12,432. Custom tile, moving the drain and the age of the building move the price most.

How we got this number
We started from Modernize's 2026 national range: $4,500 to $15,000 installed, average about $9,500[3]. Fixr says labor is 40% to 60% of a walk-in shower's cost[4], so we used the midpoint, 50%.
For Chicago labor we used Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data for the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN metro area[1] against the national figures[2]:
| Occupation (SOC code) | Chicago median hourly | U.S. median hourly | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters (47-2152) | $49.70[1] | $30.67[2] | 1.62 |
| Tile and stone setters (47-2044) | $35.90[1] | $26.77[2] | 1.34 |
A walk-in shower needs both trades, so we weighted them equally: a labor factor of 1.48. Half the price stays at national cost and half rises by 48%, which multiplies the total by 1.24. Rounded to the nearest $100:
| Input | National | Chicago (x 1.24) |
|---|---|---|
| Low end | $4,500[3] | $5,600 |
| Average | $9,500[3] | $11,800 |
| High end | $15,000[3] | $18,600 |
If labor is 40% of your job the high end drops to about $17,900; at 60% it rises to about $19,300.
Angi's Chicago numbers are its national walk-in figures ($6,000 to $12,000, average $9,000) times about 1.04[5][6]. That is a flat adjustment, not separate local pricing, which is why it sits below our wage-based range.
What changes the price in Chicago
Permit path. A shower that replaces an existing fixture fits the plumbing Express Permit, which requires at least one photo of existing conditions and the plumbing contractor's name or license number[8]. The city's 2022 fee excerpts list $75 per dwelling unit or toilet room for in-kind fixture replacement without changes to plumbing in walls, and $150 for in-kind replacement of plumbing piping[7]. Moving the drain or widening the opening moves you to an alteration permit with drawings.
Housing age. The median Chicago home was built in 1953[11]. Old drain lines and plaster walls can add work once the wall is open.
Weather. Angi notes Chicago's humid summers and freezing winters, which can cause burst pipes, and puts mold remediation at $400 to $675 if it turns up during demolition[10].
Licensed labor. Most plumbing work in Chicago must be done by a licensed and bonded plumbing contractor[9]. That keeps unlicensed low bids out of the plumbing part of the job.
Questions to ask a Chicago contractor
- Is your firm a Chicago-licensed plumbing contractor, or will you bring one in, and who pulls the Express Permit?
- Does your price assume the drain stays where it is? What changes if it has to move?
- What do you do if you find corroded drain pipe or wet subfloor once the old shower is out?
- How do you waterproof behind the tile, and is the shower pan included?
- Is the glass door in the quote, or is it a separate line?
- Are permit fees and debris hauling included?
When to call a pro
- Any new valve, drain or supply line: a Chicago-licensed plumbing contractor, unless you own and live in a detached single-family home and do it yourself[9].
- A curbless entry or a wider opening: the floor and wall work changes the permit path.
- Soft floors or stains on the ceiling below: check for leaks before you price finishes.
- To get a real number: compare at least three written quotes against the ranges above.
More questions
Is a walk-in shower more expensive in Chicago than the national average?
Labor is. BLS data for May 2025 show Chicago-area plumbers at about 1.62 times the national median wage and tile setters at about 1.34 times. Angi's Chicago figures run only about 4% above its national ones, so expect quotes to vary widely.
Do I need a permit for a walk-in shower in Chicago?
Usually, yes. Replacing an existing plumbing fixture goes through the city's Express Permit Program. Tile work alone, with no plumbing connections, does not need a building permit. Moving the drain or walls takes a different permit path.
Can I install a walk-in shower myself in Chicago?
Only in narrow cases. The city lets the owner, occupant or lessee of a detached single-family home do the plumbing personally. Anyone they hire must be a licensed plumbing contractor, and condos and two-flats do not qualify.
